Sometimes, when I’m bored at night and eating Cap’n Crunch cereal out of the box (don’t judge), I look at real estate online and pretend I live there. Then I realize I need to sell a lot more furniture. A LOT more furniture. Since there’s not much mid century modern here in NYC, I usually […]

Let’s just say that Hans Emami feels about designer Arne Jacobsen the same way I do about Charles and Ray Eames: obsessed and enthused. Anyhoo, a whole catalog of Arne Jacobsen furniture finds itself at home in this lovely abode in Sweden (where else?). For so much Arne, you’d think it’d have a too retro […]

The Egg Chair is that piece of furniture that  manages to be mid century cool, yet classic at the same time. Originally designed in the mid 1950’s for the uber sleek Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, these chairs are especially unique in their design, with organic curves and support, perfect for lounging around for a nice […]

It occurred to me recently that, what with all of my references to mid century modern design that some of you might be more interested in what I think is quirky.  Now, mid century modern design can often run the gamut of retro and ultra-cool (think Mad Men), but I prefer a more eclectic look. More “mid” […]

Today, I want to focus on the Arco Lamp by Achille & Pierre Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962.  This is one of the most iconic pieces of mid century modern lighting, behind Mariano Fortuny’s Floor Lamp and various George Nelson Pendant Lamps, in my opinion. But I’ve also been known to be moody.

… and poolside too.  Because it’s summer.  And summer in NYC means wishing for a pool or a beach where I can cool because it’s already too hot!  On that note, here are some of my favorite midcentury modern furniture pieces poolside or beach side.  Let’s all pretend to be in a better place…

…Hotel San Jose in  Austin, TX.  Actually, I’ve already been to there.  Austin is my home town (surprise!) and I used to hang out in the courtyard at Hotel San Jose Austin…a lot.  Not like a hooker or anything, maybe more like Sharon Stone in Casino, but better.

This weekend we decided we needed to get out of the city and commune with nature.  Luckily, our friends have a cute little cabin at the base of the Catskills in the Hudson Valley, about a 2 1/2 hour drive from NYC. This is farm country, as evidenced by the little farm stands dotting the gravel […]

…the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, CA. Oy! After the week I’ve had, it would be nice to get away for a looong weekend in this equal parts retro and kitschy hotel.

When I first saw images of people willingly painting their walls to look like chalkboards — with chalkboard paint– in their kitchens, their dining rooms or in their home office, I thought, “Who do these people think they are, Bart Simpson?”

Not sure that hammocks are really about the design, so much as a lax vehicle with which to enjoy the scenery.  Also, it’s been so hot, that well, all I’d like on the weekend is a hammock, a breeze, and a banana daquiri…

…this apartment via Desire to Inspire.  It’s to die for.  While I wish there were more windows, or at least larger ones, the brick accent wall more than makes up for it.  I love an exposed brick wall!  Not only that, but also it’s a really eclectic and colorful fusion of mid-century modern and contemporary, with a […]

My French is tres mal, but today’s house tour is a Paris apartment — the best kind, really — on Rue de Rivoli designed and renovated by Isabelle Stanislas and Leiko Oshima.  The interior design + architecture duo goes by the name of So-An.  If this project is any hint, you should know they specialize […]

This black and white dining room.  It’s perfection! I rarely see a black –esp.high gloss– kitchen that looks so bright and chic, but I suppose this particular eat-in kitchen gets away with it because of its adjacency to so many windows.
