What I Love…
…this apartment via Desire to Inspire. It’s to die for. While I wish there were more windows, or at least larger ones, the brick accent wall more than makes up for it. I love an exposed brick wall! Not only that, but also it’s a really eclectic and colorful fusion of mid-century modern and contemporary, with a little neo-trad thrown in for good measure.
I love it. It’s a little weird, but it works.

House Tour: Une Appartement de Rue de Rivoli
My French is tres mal, but today’s house tour is a Paris apartment — the best kind, really — on Rue de Rivoli designed and renovated by Isabelle Stanislas and Leiko Oshima. The interior design + architecture duo goes by the name of So-An. If this project is any hint, you should know they specialize in that rare mix of Parisian chic with vintage + 19th century French style in nothing but Haussmman apartments.

What I Love…
This black and white dining room. It’s perfection!
I rarely see a black –esp.high gloss– kitchen that looks so bright and chic, but I suppose this particular eat-in kitchen gets away with it because of its adjacency to so many windows.

Design Notebook: Union Jack Decor
With the Olympics starting this evening (so excited!), I thought about how chic the Union Jack always looks when used in home decor. Compared to the Stars + Stripes, which can sometimes look a tad gauche I think, Union Jack almost always works when it’s used as a decorative accessory. On that note, here is today’s Design Notebook, which features the Union Jack emboldened on everything from pillows to rugs, even dressers.

Design Notebook: A Roundup of Quirky Mid-Century Modern
It occurred to me recently that, what with all of my references to quirky and/or eccentric mid-century modern spaces that some of you might be more intersted in what I think is quirky. Now, mid-century modern decor can often run the gamut of retro and ultra-cool (think Mad Men), but I prefer a more interesting look.

House Tour: Mid-Century Modern Heaven in Meyerhofer Residence
What else can I say except, this house is pure mid-century modern perfection. Osborn Architects, based in Glandale, CA, did a complete renovation of the home’s structure and surrounding landscape. The result was this warm, inviting home with glass walls that offer differing views of the landscape.

Um….No
…well sort of.
I saw the following listing on Curbed, and my immediate gut reaction was “Ewww” and “Luann De Lesseps was right, ‘Money can’t buy you class.’” This space is terribly gaudy, chintzy, jacquard-y, and overall, it’s just tacky. It’s much too much and it’s a lot for the eyes to take in all at once.

Design Notebook: Red, White and Blue + Mid-Century and Mod
…see what I did there? I’m so clever sometimes!
Any who, it’s almost the 4th of July, non-weekend, so to honor that, here are a plethora of beautiful homes featuring red, white and blue color palettes and accents. This classic American color combination happens to work well, when done in an understated manner. For example, an all-white loft with blue and red pieces — used sparingly — is patriotically chic.

House Tour: Kuaotunu Beach House
Here’s another beautiful house in Coromandel, New Zealand by the architects, Crosson, Clarke and Carnacha. I previously covered one of their homes in my post on Mid-Century Modern Beachside. Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects has some truly amazing projects, and I would cover them all, but I particularly like their Kuaotunu Beach House.

What I Love…
… the Berman Residence, recently completed by Robert Berman, founding partner of Johnson Berman. This 40-year-old apartment is located in Mies van der Rohe’s Highfield House Condominums in Baltimore. The entire apartment is amazing, but this vignette is a great example of Berman’s aesthetic choices: mid-century modern, stylish, understated and a little playful.

Design Notebook: Mid-Century Modern Beachside
… and poolside too. Because it’s summer. And summer in NYC means wishing for a pool or a beach where I can cool because it’s already too hot! On that note, here are some of my favorite mid-century modern pieces poolside or beach side. Let’s all pretend to be in a better place…
